It is something of a surprise that St Wynwallow does not make Simon Jenkins’ list as it is a sweet church, surely the mostly southerly in the country, tucked away a short distance from Lizard point and just up the valley from Church Cove.
It is a simple twin aisle church with a north aisle having been added to the original nave.
Several things stand out:
- The mottled tower with its light and dark stone
- The use of the local black serpentine which polishes up like marble, notably in the lectern and pulpit
- The unusually elegant squint which makes the whole south corner and transept irregular
- The cawing of the corvids in the trees outside
The church is dedicated to the saint that apparently came ashore at Gunwalloe a few miles away which shares the dedication and also stands in Church Cove.
There is a fuller history here.
