St Euny church

St Euny church is very visible from the western end of the Great Flat Lode, its pinnacled tower peaking out from its surrounding trees. Although the original church of Redruth, the town developed elsewhere and the church now sits in its own churchtown on the edge of modern Redruth, near some farm buildings.

Sadly, the original Norman church was replaced in 1782 with a Georgian church, grafted on to the fine C15 tower. The standard of the tower suggests that the original church was fine, perhaps with some elegant carvings. The church was then restored by James Hicks in 1878.

Around the church are some large churchyards, reflecting the size of population locally. The frequency of mine deaths is notable.

St Euny church lychgate

The main entrance is a gothic style lychgate with an extra-long coffin rest, beyond which one is greeted by a solid gravestone to the Michell family. There are several such grave covers which are very much in the style of those in Helston.

Alas, one can give no description of the interior of the church as it was closed (with no indication of how to obtain the key or whether it would ever be open) but we noted one innovation: a QR code to make a donation to parish work.
